Flam Paradiddle-Diddle

54 BPM

What it teaches

Combines the flam with the Paradiddle-Diddle's TWO-diddle structure, not the single-diddle Flam Paradiddle — a full seven-note phrase follows the flam here versus five in Flam Paradiddle, so the challenge shifts from just landing one clean flam to keeping BOTH diddles evenly matched to each other despite the flam's added weight sitting far in front of the second one.

The common mistake

The second diddle — the one furthest from the flam — comes out weaker or less controlled than the first, because players naturally spend more repetitions perfecting the flam-plus-first-diddle combination and treat the second diddle as an afterthought; the correction is isolating just the two diddles back to back, with no flam and no leading strokes, until they're indistinguishable (the same drill the unflammed Paradiddle-Diddle needs), then reattaching the flam.

Tempo progression

Start at 54 BPM with the flam clean and both diddles matched to each other. Add 6 BPM once all seven notes hold together for a full minute; most players keep the full phrase clean through 100-120 BPM, noticeably slower than the single-diddle Flam Paradiddle because there is simply more to keep even.

Where it shows up

Used in advanced rudimental solos and drum corps features where a flammed phrase needs to sustain momentum across a longer passage than the shorter Flam Paradiddle covers.
