Why practice to a click

Practicing to a click builds internal time — the ability to feel a steady tempo even when nothing is playing it for you. A drummer who only ever plays along to a click never has to develop that internal clock; one who practices with it, then occasionally without it to check their own consistency, does. Time signature and subdivision controls exist because a bare click alone doesn't teach you where you are in a bar, only how fast the beats are going.

Building subdivision awareness

A genuinely useful way to build subdivision awareness: take a short phrase and practice it at quarter notes, then eighth notes, then sixteenth notes, all at the same BPM. The phrase itself does not change — what changes is how finely you can place notes inside each beat without rushing or dragging. Most drummers can keep quarter notes steady; the eighth-triplet and sixteenth settings are where timing actually gets tested.

What the accent is for

The accent marks beat 1 of the bar with a louder, higher-pitched click — a landmark you can feel without counting out loud. It matters most in 3/4 and 6/8, where the bar length is less intuitive than 4/4's familiar four-count; without an audible beat 1, it's easy to lose track of where the bar actually starts, especially at faster tempos.

The tempo mistake almost everyone makes

The most common mistake at any tempo: raising the BPM before the current tempo is genuinely clean. You only ever practice your mistakes faster — a sloppy passage at 100 BPM is still a sloppy passage at 120 BPM, just harder to hear as sloppy. Advance in small steps, and only once a passage is comfortable enough that you could keep going for another full minute without a stumble.
